Residential Development, Whitbourne

DJD Architects worked with landscape architect, Potterton Associates and planning consultant, PRP Consultants to secure planning permission for this development of twenty houses, apartments and bungalows on a prominent site on the edge of Whitbourne, outside of the settlement boundary, for client Signature New Homes.

The scheme is for a mix of open market and affordable homes, extending the existing village. The site is in a prominent, elevated location making it visible in the landscape, it is also outside of the settlement boundary. The project team worked hard to persuade Herefordshire Council, the Local Planning Authority that the scheme was acceptable both in terms of design and place in the landscape, and in principle due to the Authority’s lack of housing land supply, providing housing in a sustainable location.

DJD Architects worked with the Client and land owner to undertake public consultations with the local community, seeking to address objections to the scheme.

The scheme includes new public open space, providing both informal ‘natural’ toddler play and public amenity space. The design of the new houses is sympathetic to the village setting, with materials chosen to sit into the hillside rather than stand out as the rendered properties of the existing 1970’s Acreage development do.

Planning permission for the development in was achieved in November 2014.

The development was constructed by J. Harper & Sons (Leominster) Limited, of whom DJD Architects prepared the technical design information. The village location with connections to the community shop, local pub and outstanding views from the development has proven to be very popular. All homes were sold quickly, with most sold off-plan before the development was completed, a show home was never required.
