Old Park Affordable Family Homes

DJD Architects are pleased to have assisted our client, The Wrekin Housing Group to achieve full planning consent for 88 new affordable family homes in the centre of Telford.

Approved by a unanimous vote of support by the Telford and Wrekin Council planning committee, the development will deliver much needed housing for affordable rent, comprising two, three and four bedroom houses, and two bedroom bungalows.

The layout is designed with consideration of the historic colliery workings, retention of existing trees, sustainable drainage and existing drainage ditches.

Thoughtful consideration of the housing design and how it goes together creates an approachable contemporary housing, incorporating robust construction details to ensure the quality and longevity of the development.

The layout is designed to include active street frontages looking out across main road, and west over the retained open space, contributing to the sense of place created by the development, together with variations in the materials and appearance of the houses throughout the design.

Landscaping is incorporated throughout the development with the retention of the majority of existing established trees, new tree and shrub planting, and enhancements for local wildlife, including retention and management of the existing rush pasture habitat, bird nesting and bat roosting opportunities.

The housing design comprises a palette of differing brick colours to create a vibrant and varied appearance along the new streets proposed. Brick details are used to create contrast and texture in the external facade, developing a theme of saw-soothed brick panels, brick window cills and brick piers at corners which provide visual weight and interest.

Dark coloured window and door frames, have been used throughout to reflect the aspirational quality and appearance sought for the development, presenting high quality visual appeal.

Side facing elevations, generally those which are corner plots have been designed with additional windows and brick detailing to create continuous active street frontages. This includes bay windows to corner plots, with consideration to how these are located to ensure privacy.
